An allergy is when your body reacts to a substance it has become sensitive to. For example, dust, food, pollen, medication etc. Allergens in food and other substances cause your body to have an immune reaction. Hay fever is one of the most common allergic conditions. In the UK alone, around 13 million people suffer from hay fever. Although it usually begins during childhood/teenage years, you can get it at any age.
The symptoms of hay fever occur when a person has had an allergic reaction to pollen. Some of the symptoms include sneezing, runny nose, itchy/watery eyes, wheezing, coughing etc. As much as we can try to avoid pollen, unfortunately, sometimes it is just not avoidable. Particularly in the summer when there is naturally more pollen around, and we tend to spend more time outside.
While there is currently no cure for hay fever, there is a way you can relieve the symptoms, at least to a certain extent. A range of antihistamines are available at our pharmacy to help you prevent an allergic reaction from happening. There are tablets, nasal sprays and even products to help soothe symptoms, for example, sprays for itchy eyes. We also offer Fexofenadine (Telfast) which is a prescription strength antihistamine for those that suffer greatly from hay fever. After a quick consult with our pharmacist, you can purchase this from our store to help soothe any symptoms.
Please come in store and speak to our pharmacists about your options to relive your symptoms.
The Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) is a free service provided by the NHS, which allows your GP to electronically send your prescriptions to a pharmacy of your choice. It is a completely secure and confidential service, and only those who saw your paper prescriptions will also see the electronic ones.
The EPS has many benefits including being able to save you time, money and of course less visits to the GP. This is because you do not need to visit your GP every time you need a new prescription. This service particularly helps those with conditions that require regular repeat prescriptions. For example, those with diabetes, heart problems or arthritis.
The EPS may not be suitable for patients who don't get prescriptions very often, or who pick their medicines up from different pharmacies.
It is really easy to get started with us on the EPS. Simply nominate us as the pharmacy you would like your prescriptions to be sent to. You can do this by informing your GP, coming in-store and speaking to our staff or even calling us on 0207 482 2875. Once this is done we will be set up as your nominated pharmacy, and all your prescriptions will then be sent to us directly from your GP.
Whenever you need to request a repeat prescription you can come in-store, call us, or request the medication online via your account with us. For further information on this please see all our information on 'Repeat Prescriptions.' Once your medication is ready we will contact you, and you can either come in-store to collect or we can deliver it to you (subject to where your live.)
Please note that we recommend that you request your prescription at least 5 working days in advanced of your medication running out. If you are running low then we suggest you contact your GP directly and ask them to send us an urgent prescription.
If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us.
No appointments needed, easily accessible location and just a quick consultation, we ensure a hassle free service to all our patients. Simply walk in and ask to speak to our friendly and professional pharmacist about the morning after pill.
Our pharmacist will need to see the person that the emergency contraception is intended for, and will need to ask a few questions regarding the patients’ medical history. This is done in the privacy of our consultation room and everything discussed is in complete confidence. The sooner you come to our pharmacy to take the morning after pill, the greater the chances of avoiding pregnancy.
If the Pharmacist feels like Levonelle One Step is not suitable for you, they will not give you the morning after pill, but advise you to see your health care professional.
We are one of the few pharmacies that are able to provide the morning after pill free of charge to patients who are aged 24 and under, and who meet the NHS criteria. Alternatively, the pill can be purchased privately from our pharmacy.

Is hair loss causing you distress? Are you worried about what to do? Losing your hair can greatly affect your confidence and self-esteem. It is an issue that affects both men and women, with male pattern baldness being the most common form. Most men are affected by male pattern baldness as they get older, but unfortunately, some men do start to suffer much earlier in life. But for both men and women even signs of slight thinning can cause concerns.
Whether you are dealing with hair loss, or even if you just want to get a head start to help ensure your hair stays healthy for as long as possible, we offer a range of products for both men and women. From vitamins and supplements to foams and shampoos, we even have products to help conceal thinning hair.
One of the main hair loss treatments we also offer is Finasteride (Propecia). Men who suffer from male pattern baldness are sensitive to a hormone called dihydrotestosterone, which causes damage to hair follicles. Finasteride (Propecia) is a prescription strength treatment that reduces the level of this particular hormone, and in turn reverses any balding. If you think you could benefit from this treatment come in store today, and speak to our pharmacist for a quick consultation to see if the treatment is suitable for you. If it is, you should be able to take the medication away with you that day. Please note, the medication is chargeable and is for men only.
Always keep in mind that hair regrowth isn’t instant and takes time. Results may vary from person to person and in some cases products must be used continuously to maintain the effects. But the earlier you start helping to maintain normal healthy hair growth, the better.
If you are worried about hair loss then come in store today and speak to a pharmacist about your options. Our pharmacists are trained to make sure they have the right knowledge and skills in order to help you with any concerns you may have.
The Medicines Use Review (MUR) is an opportunity for you to meet with our pharmacist to discuss your medication and how you are getting along. You can meet with our pharmacist in the privacy of our consultation room and they will be able to help you –
- Find out more about the medication you are taking
- Identify and handle any problems you are having with your medication
- Improve the effectiveness of your medication by, for example, adjusting your dose
- Consider all the medication you are taking, not just those that have been prescribed
You will be able to ask our pharmacist any questions your may have, as well as giving them the opportunity to ask you any questions they may have. This differs from an ‘over-the-counter service’ as it gives both you and our pharmacist the time to concentrate on you and your medication.
Our professional pharmacists have been trained to make sure they have the right knowledge and skills to provide this service. Any questions they may ask and everything discussed is in complete confidence, and solely to ensure that they are helping you in the best way possible. They may even suggest a follow-up review appointment to see how things are going, especially if they have suggested any changes.
You may benefit greatly from a review if you are taking more than one prescription medicine or if you are taking medication for a long-term illness. For example, arthritis, asthma, heart disease etc. But of course, you do not need to be in either of these groups to be entitled for a review.
If you do have any questions or require any further information please do not hesitate to contact us.

Here at JP Pharmacy we want to help keep you and your loved ones as healthy as possible, especially by protecting you from seasonal illnesses like the Flu.
Even those that are fit and healthy can catch the flu, and for certain groups of people catching the flu can be more serious. Both adults and children with medical conditions or weakened immune systems, pregnant women and those above the age of 65, are all more likely to develop potentially serious complications from the flu. That is why the flu vaccine, commonly known as the ‘flu jab,’ is available to all adults and some children at risk. The service is available through both the NHS and privately.
You are eligible to receive a free NHS flu jab if you:
- Are aged 65 years or over
- Are pregnant
- Have certain medical conditions
- Are living in a long-stay residential care home or other long-stay care facility
- Receive a carer’s allowance, or you are the main carer for an elderly or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if you fall ill
- Are a healthcare worker with direct patient contact or a social care worker
If you are not eligible through one of the above criteria, you can still have a private flu jab for a small fee. If you are unsure whether you are eligible or not please don’t hesitate to contact a member of our pharmacy team either in-store or by calling 0207 482 2875, and we will be able to advise you.
How the flu jab works -
Studies have shown that the flu jab will definitely help protect you from catching the flu, however, it is not 100% guaranteed. This is because the flu vaccine does not stop all flu viruses and so the level of protection can vary between people. But the benefit of the flu jab is that it does help to prevent against the more ‘serious’ strains of the flu, for example, Swine flu.
When to have a flu jab -
The best time to have a flu vaccine is in the autumn, around October/November, but you can have it later in the winter aswell (subject to stock availability.)
The recommendation is that you have the vaccination once a year as over time protection from the vaccine gradually decreases and flu strains often change. This is why new vaccines are produced every year to help ensure your defence.
Flu jab side effects -
Serious side effects from the flu vaccine are very rare. You may have a slight temperature and your arm may be sore for a couple of days after having the jab.
For further information on side effects and any other information you may need on the flu jab, please visit the NHS website at https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinations/flu-influenza-vaccine/
If you've been recently diagnosed with a long-term medical condition and have been prescribed a new medicine for the first time, you may be able to get support from our pharmacists through a free scheme called the New Medicine Service (NMS.)
This service supports patients by helping them to manage their new condition and medication, in order to reduce symptoms and complications. Furthermore, the scheme helps patients quickly identify and handle any problems with their medication and provides overall information and support.
This service is only available for people living in England and for those who have been prescribed a new medicine for the following conditions
It is really simple to join the NMS. Just bring your new prescription to us, and while in store ask the pharmacist if you can take part in the scheme. You can talk to our pharmacist and ask them any questions you may have. The scheme includes two follow-up appointments, which allows you time to adjust and go through any problems/questions that may have come up. For example, if you are finding a tablet hard to swallow or experiencing any side effects. After the follow-up appointments the service then ends, but your pharmacist will always be available to talk to you about your medication.
Our professional pharmacist is there to help you, so this can be completely tailored to your lifestyle/schedule and is done in the privacy of our consultation room. Anything discussed is kept completely confidential. If in any cases a problem does occur and a solution cannot be found, our pharmacist will refer you back to your doctor.
With the rules and guidelines regarding passport photos constantly changing, you need a reliable photo printing service that can be flexible and continuously adapt. Here at JP Pharmacy we are Passport photo and Photo ID specialists, and we give our guarantee of a professional service.
As well as Passport photos, we take ID Photos for proof of age, student cards, driving licences etc. Our service is offered to both adults and children of any age.
Our ID and Passport photos are taken and printed while you wait. You can preview your photo before it is printed so you are 100% satisfied.
Sometimes your period can be starting at the most inconvenient time. You may have a holiday planned, an exam or sometimes it just isn’t ideal for your plans. At times like these, don’t let your period get in the way, delay it! We can offer you a discreet and convenient way to delay your period for up to 2-3 weeks.
It’s really simple, come in to our pharmacy and ask to speak to our pharmacist. Our pharmacist will give you a quick consult and will let you know if the treatment is suitable for you. If everything goes ok you should be able to take the medication (Norethisterone) away with you that day. Please note, there is a charge.
You can get access to this medication if you are aged 16 or over and not using any other contraceptive pill or hormonal contraception. The medicine must be started three days before your period is due so please ensure you come to our pharmacy with enough time.
Here is some further information on the period-delaying medication (Norethisterone) –
- Norethisterone works in a similar way to the naturally occurring hormone in your body, progesterone. This hormone prevents the shedding of your womb lining
- You will need to take one tablet, 3 times a day
- It can delay your period for up to 17 days, or until you stop taking the tablets
- The medication will need to be started 3 days before your period is due and once the tablets are stopped your period should start within 3 days
- Norethisterone can cause some side effects including nausea, skin problems and feeling faint. It also increases the chance of blood clots (you may notice swelling of the face, hands and feet.) Side effects vary between people, some may not experience any side effects at all, but if you do start to experience any severe side effects we advise you to stop the medication and seek medical help
- Blood clots are more likely to develop on long journeys and flights so take extra care
If you do have any questions or require any further information please do not hesitate to come in-store to speak to a member of staff or you can call us on 0207 482 2875.
We understand that it can be a pain for anyone living with a need for medication to have to constantly take time out of your busy lives to organise your next prescription. Or maybe, it’s even difficult for you to get out and about. Whatever your reason may be, we at JP Pharmacy want to take all the stress away from you. Simply nominate us as your pharmacy by letting your GP or our staff in-store know, and you will then be able to order your repeat prescription in-store, online, through our smartphone application or by calling us on 0207 482 2875.
The benefit of our online prescription manager is that you can request your prescription any time, 24/7. Here are the simple steps to follow –
1. Register an account with us online (one time only)
2. Login to your account
3. Let us know which medication you would like to request a prescription for
4. We will then liaise with your GP and let you know once your medication is ready with us
5. You can then come in-store to collect it or we can have it delivered to you (subject to where you live)
It’s as simple as that!
Please note, we do recommend that you request your prescription at least 5 working days in advanced of your medication running out. If you are running low then we suggest you contact your GP directly and ask them to send us an urgent prescription.
If for any reason we are not able to organise a repeat prescription with your GP, we will let you know as soon as we have been made aware of this. This may happen because your doctor wishes to see you for a consultation or you may have just requested the prescription too early etc. Please remember that prescriptions are issued by your doctor and it is completely at your doctors discretion as to whether they issue us a repeat prescription or not. And while we make every effort to get you your medication in time, we are dependent on your surgery issuing us a prescription.
If you do have any further questions on this service, please do not hesitate to contact us.
The tobacco epidemic is one of the biggest public health threats we have ever faced, killing more than 8 million people a year around the world. According to the NHS, in the UK alone, smoking kills over 80,000 people every year and a further 500,000 people are admitted into hospital as a direct result of smoking.
Smoking has been linked to countless conditions from depression, infertility and asthma, to the more serious conditions such as lung cancer, emphysema and heart disease. It’s really not surprising that this is the case when you consider how many harmful substances there are in a cigarette. They have thousands of different chemicals, some of which are carcinogenic (cancer causing), and examples of others being acetone (used as nail polish remover), lead and cadmium (a highly toxic metal.)
The truth of the matter is, we all know how bad smoking is for our health, and a majority of smokers will say that they want to quit but giving up can be hard. Especially without the right help and support. That’s where our friendly and professional staff come in!
There is now more support than ever before, not just in the form of information, but also products designed to reduce cravings and to fight off any of the horrible withdrawal symptoms. One of the developments has been the introduction of Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT.) There are a variety of NRT products available:
Smoking is addictive because of the nicotine in cigarettes. That is why it is hard to quit. By starting one or even a combination of the above therapies, they will give a smoker a dose of nicotine in their blood. This reduces the nicotine withdrawal symptoms and cravings, whilst they break away from the psychological habit of smoking.
Our staff can advise you on the best way to kick your smoking habit. By coming in to our store our trained pharmacist will provide you with a free consultation, asking you questions such as how many cigarettes you smoke in a day and what triggers the need for a cigarette etc. By determining your ‘level of nicotine addiction’ the pharmacist will then be able to offer their advice on what they think would work best for you.
The pharmacist may even offer advice in other forms, for example, letting you know about any local support groups, advising you to take up a hobby or even suggesting a routine to start you off.
The benefit of having this support is that we are there 7 days a week whenever you need help, or even just a friendly professional to speak with. It is a proven fact that if you receive support while trying to stop smoking your chance for success is greatly increased.
When it comes to travelling, we at Camden Travel Clinic want to help ensure the safety to your health when you are abroad. Travelling the world whether it be for work, leisure or to visit family/friends can be a great experience, but there are also things that can go wrong if proper precautions are not taken.
Firstly, there are many serious diseases that can be found in some parts of the world, some of which we do not even have here in the UK. Getting vaccinated is extremely important to help ensure you are protected against any infections. Mosquitoes can also be a problem when travelling to hot and tropical countries. Some mosquitoes can be harmless, but some mosquitoes are infected with malaria, and so when they bite the disease is passed to us. By taking anti-malaria tablets you can stop the malaria from developing into anything harmful/serious.
You also need to be careful with food and water when travelling, especially in hot/tropical and developing countries. Traveller’s Diarrhoea can affect up to 70% of people who are travelling to these regions of the world. It is picked up through bacteria/parasites in food and water. The symptoms can last a few days, or even up to around a week. These include loose stools, cramping and fever. And finally travelling to high altitudes can also affect you. If you are skiing, trekking etc, when you climb to a high altitude too quickly you can suffer from altitude sickness. This is because at higher altitudes there is less oxygen.
Our dedicated travel clinic provides a full range of services to help ensure you do not need to deal with any of these problems while abroad. We provide travel vaccinations, antimalarial tablets, traveller’s diarrhoea tablets and altitude sickness tablets for adults and children aged 12 years and older. No matter where you are travelling to, our specialist travel pharmacist will be able to offer you advice on your travel health needs and recommend any vaccinations.
Based within JP Pharmacy, Camden Travel Clinic is located on Camden High Street, just a few minutes away from the Camden Underground Station. We are easily accessible and welcome walk-in patients as well as pre-booked appointments.
We are a NATHNAC registered Yellow Fever Centre to ensure that we are not limited in our services to our patients.
Please visit www.camdentravelclinic.co.uk to find advice for where you are travelling to and to book an appointment online.
For any further information on the travel clinic, please come in-store and ask a member of staff or call us on 0207 428 4870.
